JCS "Turtle Talk"

Week of September 7th

Hello JCS families,

Thank you for a safe and successful first week of school! We're all gearing up for our first FULL week of school this coming week. There's a LOT of information in this week's JCS Journal, so please take a minute to read to the end.

School pictures this Friday, 9/12

The three Norton elementary schools’ new picture vendor, Inter-State Studio, will be at JCS this Friday, September 12th to take fall pictures. If your child attended school last week, they most likely brought home an informational packet from Inter-State Studio about school pictures. Families do NOT need to order or purchase school pictures, but all students will have their picture taken at school by Inter-State Studios to update their school records.

Families can find information about Picture Day online at https://inter-state.com/order using the JCS code 0238GQ.

Bus Expectations for Students

One of the largest routines for students to get used to when school begins is riding the school bus. While we know that not all students ride the bus to or from school, a significant number of JCS students do ride the bus. It’s important for the safety of everyone on the bus (including the bus driver) for students to follow the same expectations.

When students don’t follow the bus expectations or do things that are unsafe, the bus driver may fill out a Bus Behavior Form which will be sent to Mr. Barrette. Mr. Barrette will speak with the student, share the form with the students’ parents, and assign an appropriate consequence. If a student receives multiple Bus Behavior Forms (3 or more) or is extremely unsafe while riding the bus, they will lose the privilege to ride the bus for a period of time. See the Elementary Family Handbook for more information.

Here are the expectations that all students riding the bus need to follow. We appreciate families reviewing and reinforcing these expectations with your child.

Be safe
  • Stay in your seat and your space
  • Follow the directions of the driver
  • Keep your hands and feet to yourself
  • Use walking feet at all times
  • Keep all items away from the bus windows

Be kind
  • Use kind words towards all students and the driver

Be Respectful and Responsible
  • Keep your area on the bus clean (Including the seat)
  • Take all of your items when you leave the bus

Kindergarten Morning Drop-off Update

Thank you to families of Kindergarten students for taking the time to get used to our morning drop-off procedures. Morning drop-off goes more quickly and smoothly when students are ready to exit their vehicle after pulling up to the cone. Staff are ready to assist students so that parents don’t need to get out of the car.

Kindergarten families may have noticed that Kindergarten teachers have been outside each morning to greet their students and gather them together as a classroom before entering the building. Starting on Tuesday, we will be moving to our regular drop-off routine where Kindergarten students walk into Door 7 (the Kindergarten wing) on their own instead of meeting their Kindergarten teacher outside. We will still have staff members outside during drop-off to assist any students who may need assistance walking to Door 7.

Summer Reading Update (1st, 2nd, & 3rd Grades)

In June, your child was sent home an optional summer learning packet that included: reading and math logs, as well as July and August math calendars. The students were to log any books read, and any math activities completed. The calendars gave daily fun math activities to complete, along with reading and math resources for the summer months.

If your child completed the reading and math logs, along with the math calendars, please have your child return them to their classroom teacher by the latest, Tuesday, September 9th.

Students who return their packets will be entered into a raffle to win prizes! Thanks for your support!
