JCS "Turtle Talk"

Week of November 23rd

Hi JCS families,

We have a short, "zig zag" week leading up to the Thanksgiving holiday break. There is an EARLY RELEASE DAY on Wednesday 11/26 and NO SCHOOL on Thursday 11/27 and Friday 11/28 for the Thanksgiving Break. We wish a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday to all JCS families!

Thanksgiving is a time that many of us think about and reflect on the people and parts of our lives we are grateful for. It's also a time that can be emotional as we remember the important people in our life that are no longer with us. We understand that this can also be the case for our students, even if they themselves may not fully understand all of their "big feelings". If your child may be struggling as the holidays approach, please let us know so that we can help support them at school.

Outside Recess Procedures During Winter/Cold Weather

While winter is still a month away, the weather is getting colder and it’s time to review the outdoor recess procedures during cold weather. Please see the school website at https://jcs.norton.k12.ma.us/outside-recess for detailed information.

When do we go outside and when do we stay inside?
It’s part of a healthy school day for all of our PreK through 3rd grade students to have daily active, unstructured time to play outside whenever possible. We go outside for 30 minutes of recess every day unless it’s actively raining OR the wind chill/”feels like” temperature is below 25 degrees. If the wind chill/”feels like” temperature is below 25 degrees we will have indoor recess.

What should students wear for outdoor recess during cold weather/winter?
Students should come to school every day prepared to spend 30 minutes outside at recess. When it’s cold outside, we recommend that every student wear a warm jacket, hat, and gloves/mittens. Students should also wear shoes that are appropriate for outside play in cold weather. Students can bring boots with them and change for recess, if needed.

Winter Coats Available for Families in Need

Through the generosity of a donation from the Knights of Columbus, we have a number of brand-new winter coats across a variety of sizes available for children. As a school community, we want to help ensure that all of our students have a warm coat for this winter. If your family could use a winter coat for your child, please reach out to Mr. Paul Barrette (pbarrette@norton.k12.ma.us) or Mrs. Kristi Fernandes (kfernandes@norton.k12.ma.us) and we will work with you to find a coat that fits your child. We will keep all communications confidential and we're happy to work with any JCS family. Big thanks to the Knights of Columbus!
