JCS "Turtle Talk"

Week of December 7th

Hi JCS families,

We have two full weeks and a day and a half of school before the December Vacation! The time is going to fly by and we know that this is a busy and sometimes stressful  time of year for everyone. If your child is having difficulty, please let us know so that we can work with you to support them leading up to the holidays.

1st Trimester Report Cards

1st Trimester Report Cards will be sent home with students on Monday, December 8th. Please check your child’s backpack for a folder containing the report card.

If any family has questions or concerns about their child's report card, please reach out to your child's classroom teacher.

JCS Holiday Spirit Week+, December 15th through 23rd

We want to let families know well ahead of time about the JCS Holiday Spirit Week+ we have planned for students and staff starting on Monday, December 15th running through Tuesday, December 23rd. The themes for each day are very simple and no family should feel any pressure or obligation to purchase anything special for their child to participate. If your child has clothing or items that match the theme for a particular Spirit Day, we invite and encourage them to wear them. Here is the schedule of Spirit Days:

  • Monday, December 15th - Sea Turtle or Purple Day
  • Tuesday, December 16th - Hat Day
  • Wednesday, December 17th - Pajama Day
  • Thursday, December 18th - Sock Day

Monthly Trait, Empathy

We are looking forward to focusing on Empathy over the next month as part of the PurposeFull People program through Character Strong! One way to think about Empathy is “understanding and connecting with other people’s feelings.” Empathy is a practice that can help us grow strong relationships.

Empathy is 1 of 3 traits we will focus on throughout the year that helps students Be Kind. Across grade levels, students will be developing skills like perspective-taking, conflict resolution, and leadership.

New Stack Up Record!

November 18th–20th, students who attended their regularly scheduled PE classes participated in speed stacking activities. These 285 students had the exciting opportunity to be part of a world record–setting event. THank you Mrs. Nunes for this awesome activity and opportunity and we're already looking forward to joining the fun again next year!

Outside Recess Procedures During Winter/Cold Weather

While winter is still a month away, the weather is getting colder and it’s time to review the outdoor recess procedures during cold weather. Please see the school website at https://jcs.norton.k12.ma.us/outside-recess for detailed information.

When do we go outside and when do we stay inside?
It’s part of a healthy school day for all of our PreK through 3rd grade students to have daily active, unstructured time to play outside whenever possible. We go outside for 30 minutes of recess every day unless it’s actively raining OR the wind chill/”feels like” temperature is below 25 degrees. If the wind chill/”feels like” temperature is below 25 degrees we will have indoor recess.

What should students wear for outdoor recess during cold weather/winter?
Students should come to school every day prepared to spend 30 minutes outside at recess. When it’s cold outside, we recommend that every student wear a warm jacket, hat, and gloves/mittens. Students should also wear shoes that are appropriate for outside play in cold weather. Students can bring boots with them and change for recess, if needed.
