JCS "Turtle Talk"

Week of March 15th

Hi JCS families,

It was fun to get a little preview of spring this past week with some warm days, but the weather quickly shifted back to some colder days. It’s important that students and their families check the weather before coming to school each day and dress appropriately to be outside for recess. This week the weather looks to be on the colder side, so it’s important that students have clothing to allow them to be comfortable and warm during outdoor recess.

Rock Your Socks Day!

We invite JCS students and staff to wear colorful, mismatched socks this Friday, March 20th to celebrate “Rock Your Socks”, World Down Syndrome Day. The official World Down Syndrome Day is held every year on March 21st, but we would like our school community to have an opportunity to celebrate together, so we’re going to celebrate it this Friday.

Every year on March 21, people all around the world come together to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day by wearing brightly colored, mismatched socks. March 21st is symbolic because people with Down syndrome have 3 copies of their 21st chromosome. Socks were chosen because the karyotype of Down syndrome chromosomes actually looks like mismatched socks!

cooperation

Monthly Trait, Cooperation

This month’s focus is Cooperation. One way to think about Cooperation is “working together to reach shared goals.” As a family, talk about how this definition applies to how you work together at home. What are some goals you share?

Cooperation is 1 of 3 traits we will focus on throughout the year that helps students Be Kind. Across grade levels, students will be developing skills like perspective-taking, conflict resolution, and leadership.

safety

School Lockdown Drill

On Friday, Dr O’Neill shared some information about the district partnering with the Norton Police and Fire Departments and our School Resource Officers to begin practicing school lockdown drills. Like other types of safety drills, including fire drills, lockdown drills help students and staff know what to do in the unlikely event of an emergency. In elementary schools, the focus during safety drills is on listening to the teacher, staying calm, and practicing routines that help everyone stay safe. It’s completely understandable that JCS families may be concerned about what types of information will be discussed with students and how the drill will be carried out.

At Mr. Barrette’s prior K-5 school in RI, they held two lock down drills per year, so he has a lot of experience with these types of drills. We won’t be talking about unnecessary details and situations that were not age-appropriate or could scare our students. We will simply talk about how we will stay safe if something is happening in the neighborhood or area. We will not be discussing or talking about school shootings. Our Norton School Resource Officers have age appropriate materials to use to introduce the safety drills to even our youngest students. They are going to work with principals and administrators to plan for each specific school to make sure the information and approach is age appropriate.
