Week of October 27th

Hello JCS families,

The weather looks to vary widely this week, starting very cool early in the week with the temperature gradually warming until the high is in upper 70s on Halloween! We encourage students to dress in layers to be as comfortable as possible.
Two School Spirit Opportunities this Week!
There are TWO opportunities for students and staff to show their school spirit on Tuesday and Thursday!

Any student that would prefer to show their school spirit by wearing purple or their Norton/JCS gear on Tuesday and/or Thursday is encouraged to do so. We do not want any family to feel that they need to purchase anything special or specific for this Tuesday or Thursday in order for your child to participate.

Pink Out this Tuesday, October 29th
J.C. Solmonese School is turning PINK to recognize the month of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We invite all students and staff to come to school wearing something pink this Tuesday, October 29th, in support of this special month! Please know that we will not be discussing breast cancer with students at school. This is obviously a very complex, serious, and emotional topic. We know that breast cancer has impacted so many of our students' and staff members’ families and we want to be as sensitive as possible.

Costumes on Thursday, October 31st
We are planning to continue the JCS tradition of inviting students to bring a costume to wear to school to celebrate Halloween on Thursday, October 31st. We understand and recognize that not all families celebrate or recognize Halloween and bringing a costume to school is completely voluntary and optional. Each grade level from PreK to 3rd grade will decide exactly during which part of the school day they will wear costumes, so be on the lookout for an email from your child’s teacher/grade level team with more information.

Here are the traditional guidelines that all grade levels will follow in terms of student costumes:
  • Each student MUST have a bag labeled with their name to bring and store their costume
  • Costumes may not include weapons
  • Costumes may not include face paint or face masks
  • Costumes may not include hair spray/dye

Monthly Trait, Responsibility
This month we are talking about Responsibility. One way to define Responsibility is “taking action and understanding the impact of our choices.” Taking action can mean doing the right thing or completing the tasks you have been assigned. Understanding the impact of our choices means that our actions matter. Positive and responsible actions can help people and irresponsible actions can hurt others.

Responsibility is 1 of 3 traits we will focus on throughout the year that helps students Be Strong. The PurposeFull People” program from Character Strong provides materials, lessons, and activities that we use throughout the school year to help our students learn to Be Kind, Be Strong, and Be Well.

School Picture Retakes, Thursday November 7th
Lifetouch will be at JCS on Thursday November 7th offering school picture retakes for any students who missed the first school picture day or whose family would like to have their picture retaken. Packets with specific information will be sent home to families.
Veterans Day
Parents/Family Members Who Are Veterans
Monday, November 11th is Veterans Day and we are looking to celebrate together as a school community. We are planning to have a short ceremony on Friday morning, November 8th at 9:30 AM shortly after student arrival. If the weather is clear, we will gather outside the front of the school near our flag pole to say the pledge of allegiance together and engage in a moment of silence. We’re also working to see if NHS musicians will be able to join us for the playing of “Taps”. If it is raining, we will gather together in the gym.

We would like to invite any JCS parents who are veterans to join us on Friday morning on November 8th for this quick school celebration so that we can acknowledge and honor you as part of our ceremony. My own father was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War who received a Purple Heart and Bronze Star and I understand how important it is for all of us to thank and honor our veterans all throughout the year, especially on Veterans Day.

If you as a parent would be interested in joining us, please let Mr. Barrette know by sending me a quick email at pbarrette@norton.k12.ma.us. We would love to have JCS veterans join us on this special morning.

Freeze Pops on Monday During Lunch Compliments of the SPO
The JCS SPO is offering all students a free freeze pop during lunch on Monday as a "thank you" for the candy donations that families brought in originally for the HAY Trunk or Treat. Because the HAY Trunk or Treat was cancelled, all of the candy donations will be distributed during the Chartley Halloween Parade.
